Sunset at Isle of Mull

It is a begining of November, it is cold and rainy outside and I am sitting in front of my computer looking through that heap of pictures from our May-June trip (honneymoon) to Scotland. I am looking at the pictures from the Scottish islands and strange feelings overwhelm me; the songs from the Pink Floyd album Dark Side of the Moon just sketch in my mood and I realize why such a odd but beautiful music got its birth right here, in Great Britain.

I am aware that Im not treating these pictures in a objective way, they are connected to my memories of the trip itself but I have to repeat again – Scotland is a unique country with amazing landscpae that you will not find anywhere else in the world.North Uist, Outer Hebrides Last time I wrote about the beauty of Scottish mainland but the landscape of islands is just magic! And it is not only the most famous Isle of Skye connected by bridge with the mainland; there are also sparsely inhabited islands of Inner and Outer Hebrides accessible mostly by ferry. Mountains at dusk, Isle of Skye Look at the map of western Scotland and you understand why those 9 days that we had for the isladn trip was piteously little time – just enough to drive quickly through the Outer Hebrides from North to South, to make a short two-days stop at the Isle of Skye and spend one night at the Isle of Mull with a short cruise to Staffa Island with the famous basalt colums and Lunga Island with the tamest population of Puffins in United Kingdom. I have already written about the Scottish beaches – and the isladns are not exception – one beach better that the other, just like the beaches you know from the travel-agencies leaflets attracting the tourists to one of the equatorial tropical paradises. The Cuillin Mountains in South are no way the most beutiful place of the Isle of Skye – the rounded granite hils contrast with the flat basalt lava-flows in the northern part of the island. The views of the mountains at sunset are unforgettable!

Anxiety can come over you when visiting the islands of Outer Hebrides (Harris, Lewis, Uist) – this is the last rafuge of the land, westward there are only masses of the cold Atlantic Ocean. Poor vegetation cover battered by winds, the land affected by centuries of the peatbog mining, sparse inhabitation and rough nature of the locals who do not like being in any way compared to the people on mainland.

Just for interest – it is not completely truth, that the Outer Hebrides are the last point of land in western Scotland – Beach, Harris, Outer Hebrides ca. 60 km west of Outer Hebrides there is a group of small islands called St. Kilda with the largest island Hitra ca. 2x5 km inhabited for at least 2000 years by population of max. 180 people – the last of them were evacuated from the island in 1930 (It will sound familiar but it is like with all the indigenous people anywhere else – the arrival of the “civilization” brought destruction to the original community, the people lost their ability to care about themselves).Rock, Isle of Skye St. Kilda is not only interesting because of one of the most primordial breed of sheeps still thriving on the remote island but also the endemic St. Kilda Wren – a little larger relative of the usual European bird species. And “civilization” again – the hunt for the St.Kilda Wren by enthusiastic “ornithologists” in last century brought this species amost to an extinction – fortunately at present-day the population of Wren is steady again.St Kilda is first of all known as one of the largest sea-bird colonies in Europe – over half a million sea birds nest here every season including one of the biggest Gannetry in the world... but coming back to the Hebrides; our last stop during the isladns trip was the Isle of Mull – place that was simply a logical stopover before we turned back to Edinburgh.Cuillin Mountains from North, Isle of Skye Unfortunately the lack of the time and miss of the the last evening ferry to Mull caused that we had to find overnight at mainland and catch the first morning to Mull the other day. Following was a bit crazy drive around the western part of Mull almost missing the departure of the cruise to Staffa and Lunga Islands... after coming back from the cruise we were lucky to find free BB and have a rest for a while. The evening drive around the eastern part of Mull turned to be one of the most amazing experience from the whole Scotland trip – having not much fuel in the car for a long drive made us do the trip calmly with no rush. It was unforgettable evenng and especially the magic sunset above the sea that turned the skyline into a flood of orange colors drawing into the dark silhouettes of small islands...

Just one note at the end – If you happen to be in Scotland one day, try to turn away from your planned road and ecplore a bit the forgoten corners of Scotland, you might be lucky as we were to find one of the lost paradises...
