Photo story – fighting KittiwakesWhen we headed north to spend one weekend at Norwegian Runde Island at the end of June this year, I hardly could imagine I would see the best by watching the colony of Kitttiwakes (Rissa tridactyla). I was mainly looking forward to watching Atlantic Puffins (Fratercula arctica) and Great Skua (Stercorarius skua). From these two species Great Skua was very active on the island but waiting for the Puffins was a bit dissapointing – see the article Runde 2008 – delayed season. Unexpected show and an opportunity to make some nice action shots came along by chance as it sometimes happen – I came to observe colony of kittiwakes at the cliff where I have already been during my early Spring visit in March. I was lucky to watch fight of two Kittiwakes – I described the fight and published one of the pictures already in the above mentioned article. Now I got more time to process the rest of the pictures from the fight series. Quite bad conditions during this photo-trip – rapid movement of the birds and difficult light conditions with dark background and white Kittiwakes caused quite significant amount of “trash shots” during continuous shooting. Quite a portion of pictures was simply out of focus, it also took some time to do the right EV correction not mentioning the pictures where the birds simply “disappeared” from the viewfinder – it is quite hard task to make pictures of falling, rapidly moving birds at about 8 meters distance with 500mm lens. This is after all obvious from the photographs presented here – although the best I chose from the series I cannot say I was really playing with their composition – it is fair to say that I was lucky when I could glimpse the swirling birds in the viewfinder and then to check the results on the LCD afterwards. Luckily some of the pictures went out from the camera in quite good shape J - I hope you will like it; the pictures are from two continuous shooting series…
