Avocets at Texel Island
Last winter, when I was considering spots to visit this year, the name Texel came to my mind – the island at the northern coast of Netherlands I remembered Juza did his wildlife gathering the year before at. I searched for some information on the internet and without hesitation I decided this could be my hotspot of this season. The reason was quite clear – where else in Europe and within close distance I could watch and photograph tame Pied Avocets (Recurvirostra avosetta)?
Pied Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta) The trip was scheduled at the beginning of April but things seldom are straightforward – the original plan to spent private holiday with my wife went wrong. First we wanted to join our friend – photographer Martin Mecnarowski and later Michal Jirous wanted to join either. The failure of our car the very last evening before our departure made us to go directly to car service. I had to cancel the trip as well as did the other guys.
Hygiene:
I did not give up and made the trip alone one month later – at Texel Island I joined three other photographers (Pali, Evzen and Ondra) – see my previous report Being birder for two days. Because I was not as successful as the other guys I hesitated lately if I should publish the pictures presented in this article – one has to be used to doing photography in a group of people and I realized that I was rather stand-alone photographer. I am not pushing enough to promote myself in the group and moreover I’m not very happy to have identical pictures with the same pose and same light conditions as the other photographers get. And there are some natural reasons to do wildlife photography solitary – less people make less noise in the nature so you can get closer to wildlife, and another factor is crucial for me – at any time, I can decide where to go and what to do without the need to compromise with other peoples` wishes…
Sunset:
So it was just few words about my experience with wildlife photography in group of people and now finally some pictures. We are in the middle of moving to a new flat so I leave out more writing for today and rather present more pictures…
Hunting Avocets - the bird whirls up the mud in the shallow waters and catches the prey raised up from the bottom:
... miss is the often sight...
... but sometimes the hunt is successful...
... goodie in the beak – poor slug:
And sunset shot at the end of this series:
And few more pictures of birds from Texel Island
