I’m a killer! What about you…?

 

It is difficult to cope with things that happen the other ways around than you expect. Did it ever happen to you that you wanted to help somebody but you hurt instead? Do you like nature and want to keep it safe? Do you like birds and the last thing you want to do is to harm them? That is exactly what happens sometimes.

 

How many birds last out till their natural death? (cliffs of Jan Mayen Island)

First story: Pipit in the meadow

 

Place: Runde Island, Norway

Time: July 2008

Scene: It is early summer morning and I ascend the hill to take pictures of Great Skua nesting in the meadows at the top of the island. I turn off the path and wade through the dense grass wet from the morning dew. I pass some 20 meters when suddenly small bird takes off from beneath my foot. A bit shocked I realise that Pipits build their hidden nests in grass and leave the brood only during immediate danger. I was lucky this time – nothing happened so I just made sure the nest with beautiful small eggs was OK and left the scene swiftly and ashamedly…

 

Second story: Meeting the monster

 

Place: Aberdeenshire, Scotland

Time: May 2009

Scene: It is about an hour since we have left the airport in Aberdeen and picked up the monstrum (= Vauxhall Insignia) from the car rental. We are at the very beginning of our three-week Scottish trip and surely there are many great moments with birds ahead of us. It is beautiful sunny late afternoon and we turn the car into the fields of meadows rimmed by bushy walls; the engine purrs silently and it all feels so calm, world is so beautiful in that moment…in the same time little shadow rushes to the scene from left side bushes, I can hear slight bump and see the small bird swirling into the grass on the other side of the road behind us. Is that bird alive? I do not dare to come back and check that. My mood drops down below zero – it is May, the time of bird nesting and chicks feeding – the bird was probably an adult hunting insect for its small offspring… :-(

 

Third story: Silver flash

 

Place: Måløy, Norway

Time: July 2010

Scene: After four rainy days at Runde Island I am heading home to Bergen. It is late morning. After short visit of the Måløy Island Im driving our silver-coloured car with the speed 70 km/hour, ascending a hill overgrown with fresh green bushes and trees. Situation almost identical to last year trip to Scotland – the bird appears unexpectedly from the green on the side and I am too slow to react adequately. I stop the engine and go back to check what happens. The little birds lying down at the road does not breathe – it is young Whitethroat – probably too inexperienced to avoid fatal contact with human and his mortal gadgets. I continue sadly home thinking of the birds that does not get born because I have killed this particular bird.

 

 

It is difficult to admit but during little more than one year I killed two birds – how many is killed by the people that drive as maniacs (I consider myself very careful and attentive driver) and do not take care about the nature? And what about you? Do you know that frustration and anger from what you have caused? Would not be better to live somewhere far from the civilization and human devices that nature cannot defend itself from? Please, drive carefully!

    Jirko taky se mi to letos stalo. Několikrát. Neuděláš nic a ještě na tebe ostatní vztekle troubí - nedivím se, ale většinou se snažím se střetu vyhnout i za cenu toho že rozbiju auto. Vždy mě strašně mrzí když mi pod koly zahyne nějaký živočich. Mám toho letos na svědomí víc než ty, bohužel - raději bych to měl vyfocené

    Ahoj Tomasi, je to vzdy takova rychlost, ze se tomu da tezko zabranit, nejhorsi je ten pocit, ze jsi zpusobil neco, co z hloubi duse nesnasis a pritom s tim nic nenadelas...

    Muzu te uklidnit, kazdy se boji o sve auto (a ti co jezdi jako blazni ve svych nablyskanych sportacich jeste vic). Takze tohoto bych se nebal.

    Samozrejme kazdemu se obcas stane, ze nechtene ublizi nejakemu zvireti. Bohuzel s tim se neda nic delat, jen se musime snazit byt co nejopatrnejsi.

    Ahoj Jirko,

    musím říct, že je to hodně zajímavý článek, resp. úvaha. Sám jsem něco podobného řešil (v sobě) a došel jsem asi k tomuto:

    Je třeba rozlišit, co je úmysl a co je nešťatná náhoda a daň za civilizaci (které jsme součástí, ať se nám to líbí nebo ne). Počítám se mezi lidi, kteří se snaží eliminovat podobné incidenty na minimum. Dělám vše proto, aby k tomu nedocházelo a musím konstatovat, že mám letos (vědomě) na svědomí smrt jednoho kosa kamikadze. Mrzelo mě to, do konce jízdy jsem mlčel a v hlavě se mi honilo spousta myšlenek, jak tomu šlo zabránit. Kdybych vyjel o 10 sec dřív nebo o 10 sec později, tak jsme se v pohodě minuli.

    Pak jsem si vzpomněl, kolikrát jsem podobné srážce zabránil tím, že takový život kolem auta periferně sleduji, kolik jsem nepřejel psů, koček a ježků a došlo mi, že můj dopad na přírodu prostě nemůže být 0%, ale můžu a dělám maximum, aby to procento dopadu bylo co nejmenší. A ten letošní kos byl jeden z dlouhé řady těch, kteří mi pod koly mohli ...

    Diky Petre! Musim s Tebou plne souhlasit, krasne jsi to vyjadril.
    Samozrejme jsem to psal s vedomim "hod kamenem kdo jsi bez viny" ale stejne se clovek nikdy neubrani smutku kdyz uz se mu neco podobneho prihodi. Zajimave je, ze si nevybavuji zadne mrtve ptacky predtim, nez jsem je zacal fotit - byl jsem proste asi nevsimavy.
    BTW chtel bych mit Tvuj sloh a vypravecske schopnosti ;-)
    Mej se skvele.

    Tohle už určitě zažil každý, kdo nějakou dobu řídí. O tom, že se tomu často nedá zabránit, svědčí i moje zkušenost - jel jsem autem po úzké cestě na okraji pískovny a člověk jdoucí běžnou chůzí by mě v ten moment nejspíš předstihl. Najednou se odkudsi z neznáma vyrojila skupinka zajíců, skákali na všechny strany a než jsem stačil položit nohu na brzdu, bylo pozdě. Jeden z nich se odrazil a jeho skok skončil přímo pod mým kolem. Jedné letní noci jsem zastavil uprostřed silnice, abych nepřejel naprosto zmatené a oslněné lišče a minulý týden jsem v třicetikilometrové rychlosti tak tak dobrzdil před přebíhající kočkou. A tak dále, nevyhneme se tomu...
    Ale pořád nejsme takoví, jako jeden můj známý, který dostal chuť na zajíce, tak v noci s kamarády zajel k lesu a tam si jednoho ušáka naschvál porazil.

    Samozrejme je to tak jak rikas, napsal jsem ten clanek spis jako uvahu o tom, kolik asi zvirat denne zahyne diky nasim navykum a civilizacnim vydobytkum. Jestlize jezdim opatrne a vseho si vzsimam a presto zabiji nekolik zvirat, kolik jich asi zabije neohleduplny ridic/clovek nevedomky a nekdy jen tak pro zabavu??? A ze takovych divnych lidi je zrovna u nas v Cechach porad dost a dost...
